Jack Johnson

Curious. Driven. Ingenious.

“I’m making the best use of my architecture studio time at school thanks to my experience working in an architecture firm while I earn my degree. It has focused me on constructability. While my designs may be grand and expensive, they are buildable and have application in practice.”

Jack Johnson is an intern architectural designer who is working at KMB architects while completing his Bachelor of Architecture at California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo. Jack is passionate about sustainable design and regenerative urbanism. He believes that it is essential that a building speaks to its place, respecting both the historical context of the developed condition and the natural, pre-developed history of the site. Each material selection and system represents an opportunity to design in service of that belief.

Jack is a significant contributor to the firm’s visualization work. He creates photo-realistic renderings using Rhino in conjunction with V-Ray with aspirations of incorporating animations using Unreal Engine. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Jack is examining ways to implement more virtual reality into our practice to enhance the experience for our clients.

“My goal with renderings is photorealism. I want the viewer to ask where the photograph was taken. I have the same goal with animations. I want the visualization to look as life-like as possible.”

Jack thrives when given new challenges and frequently supports our teams with needed research, modeling, and document production. His design interests extend beyond the built environment to design for cars, motorcycles, and yachts, as well as implementing industry-leading systems yet to be commercialized such as harnessing the power of algae as a fuel source. Because of this, Jack approaches design from a different perspective, and also contributes his ideas in schematic design.
