Ed Schilter, RA | Principal

Decisive. Passionate. Mentor.

When working alongside Ed you are struck by his passion. As a Principal, Ed is undoubtedly committed to his design practice, a project’s success, and his team; a culmination of nearly five decades of architectural experience. Having overseen the design for some of Washington State’s Department of Corrections (DOC) and the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) most significant projects over the last 25 years, Ed is extremely fulfilled by the relationships he has built and the challenges that have been overcome with trusted team members. It’s not unique after a project closes out that the team asks, “when can we do this again?”.

“Every design and project decision should be built on your personal ethics and moral basis. What you do reflects on the firm, but it is your personal responsibility; you must be able to stand behind your choices.”

Over the span of Ed’s career, it became clear to him that architectural processes and lessons are to be shared, not withheld. He has long been an advocate for mentorship; distilling, contributing, and generously sharing his design and project management approaches with KMB architects’ team. Through this, Ed hopes to instill a similar appreciation for the art of architecture, saying

“Architecture is not something you do for a few years and then retire; it’s a lifetime commitment and if you love it, you will never work another day in your life.”
