Grapeview School District, Grapeview Elementary School Modernization

In late 2011, KMB was selected to perform a Study and Survey of Grapeview School District’s existing educational facilities. KMB utilized the services of several engineers to develop a comprehensive report of the elementary and middle school buildings. KMB also provided evaluations of site conditions and documented its on-site work with a host of photographs illustrating the noted deficiencies from the written report. A presentation to the School Board in early 2012 resulted in favorable interest in exploring options to upgrade and improve conditions at the elementary school. KMB met with the elementary and middle school staff to discuss suggestions for improvements to the Grapeview School campus. In a subsequent meeting with the staff, KMB led a design charrette process using color-coded blocks of space and allowed staff to perform a “hands-on” exercise of configuring the blocks of space into a design for the elementary building. This exercise lead to the development of a six classroom wing addition and the creation of a separate student lunch room and kitchen in the existing play shed area. Added elements included a new platform/stage on the end of the existing gymnasium, expansion of the library, relocation of the school administration area, and siting of a new play shed. KMB refined this conceptual plan and presented a site and floor plan to the School Board. The Board was so encouraged by the scheme, they requested the development of a cost model for consideration of a Board resolution to request a public vote to authorize the sale of bonds. To support the District in its effort to pass the bond measure, KMB provided conceptual site and floor plans, area summary, three-dimensional models of the building design, and a project estimate outlining all project costs including price escalation and contingencies.
