The KMB team came together over the past few weeks to create an entry for the annual SideWalk Gingerbread Village. The event invites local Olympia participants to create Gingerbread Houses or Castles to be auctioned off to raise funds for the SideWalk organization which aims to end homelessness through community engagement.

Our Gingerbread House was inspired by the Queen Anne Style of architecture which found popularity in the United States in the 1870-1880s. Queen Anne houses are typically distinguished by a “picturesque” use of towers, turrets, gables, porches, chimneys and other elements to produce a striking silhouette. They often incorporate a variety of decoration and detail, many different exterior colors and a variety of finishes.

The design was based off a design published in Scientific American – Architect and Builders Edition in June of 1887. In true architect fashion, Emily created a SketchUp model and a complete set of elevations for the house to scale. Members of the Gingerbread House Committee baked, assembled and decorated the house, and had a great time in the process. The finished product, entitled “Victorian Winter Retreat” features a polygonal tower coated in a rock candy “cobblestone” exterior and a frosted wheat “slate” roof which exemplify the traditional Queen Anne style.

We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the holiday season, help support our community and come together as a team.
